Torah observant of Lord Yeshua of non-rabbinic practices

Shalom! To my amazement this is a very popular page on this ministry site? I look at the numbers often.  So I am blessed that there are those interested in helping the homeless. I have been doing this for years now.  If you have any questions or comments, please send me an email Douglas Nicholson

I did! Lots of fun and blessing to have! Anyone can do this! It's so easy!

Matthew 25:40  And the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it  unto me.

Matthew 19:21 Jesus said to him, "If you want to be perfect, go, sell what you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow Me."

Psalm 9:18  For the needy shall not always be forgotten; The expectation of the poor shall not perish forever.

Deuteronomy 15:11 "For the poor will never cease from the land; therefore I command you, saying, 'You shall open your hand wide to your brother, to your poor and your needy, in your land.'

Proverbs 14:21He who despises his neighbor sins; But he who has mercy on the poor, happy is he.
Proverbs 14:31 He who oppresses the poor reproaches his Maker, But he who honors Him has mercy on the needy.
Proverbs 17:5 He who mocks the poor reproaches his Maker; He who is glad at calamity will not go unpunished.
Proverbs 19:17 He who has pity on the poor lends to the LORD, And He will pay back what he has given.
Proverbs 21:13 Whoever shuts his ears to the cry of the poor Will also cry himself and not be heard.
Proverbs 22:9 He who has a generous eye will be blessed, For he gives of his bread to the poor.
Proverbs 22:22 Do not rob the poor because he is poor, Nor oppress the afflicted at the gate;
Proverbs 28:27 He who gives to the poor will not lack, But he who hides his eyes will have many curses.
Proverbs 29:14 The king who judges the poor with truth, His throne will be established forever.
Proverbs 31:9 Open your mouth, judge righteously, And plead the cause of the poor and needy.

Here is your chance to be huge blessing to our Lord Yeshua !

Go out and adopt a homeless person! The homeless are everywhere!

Over the years sense becoming  believer in Messiah Yeshua I have gone and sought out homeless people to ministry to as an ongoing ministry outreach.

It is real easy to do, very rewarding both now and in the hereafter and for those who are homeless. They really do appreciate having a friend in our Adonai Yeshua.

 How does it work?

Before you go out to find your homeless pray for the Lord's help and guidance first!

Then go out and find yourself a homeless person to work with. They are basically all the same! Go as the Lord leads you.

Once you find a possible candidate to work withĒto minister to"

Try striking up a repartee with you perspective homeless candidate.

The homeless are always hustling for change or a few bucks to help get them through the day.

So with that in mind I will always provide some cash that will afford the homeless enough money to get them at least a meal for a day.

Initially I try to meet with my homeless candidate as often as I can. I also bring cash each time to provide a daily meal.

I don't worry how they might spend that money. That is not the concern!.

The concern is to give them hope in a less then kind world.

Let Jesus worry about what the homeless dose with the money after you give it to them.

After developing an ongoing dialog with your homeless person you then can start ministering to their other needs as well.

One of the first items that a homeless person needs is an ID. A state ID of some kind.

Ask if they have an ID card? A State ID and a Social Security card.

If they don't have any IDís cards

This will be priority one on your list of ministry objectives in working with your homeless person.

Most of the homeless do not have any I D of any kind for whatever reasons.

This makes it tough to obtain possible benefits from various public assistance programs unless you have a valid ID and Social Security card.

Homeless people cannot get an ID unless they have a home address!

So the homeless are in a catch 22 situation.

What to do!

The solution! You provide your own address and or PO Box  for this homeless persons ID cards.

Most states require a physical address of some kind before they will issue an ID card but you can utilize a PO Box address on the actual ID card.

For myself I use my physical address and then have the DMV place my PO Box address on the actual ID card.

Remember youíre the volunteer for our Lord Yeshua trying to help solve some of the issues that your homeless person may have.

Obtaining the proper ID's for your homeless person ministry will now open the doors to obtain possible assistance from various public social service programs in your area.

And you will be the one who is going to do much if not all of the leg work for your homeless person ministry outreach.

Some people like to fix up old cars or other things.

I like to look at helping the homeless as restoring broken down people who really could appreciate love and blessing of a kind person of God

It is not that tough getting your homeless person an I D card.

Either go online to get the application for your state I D card or go to the local department of motor vehicles and get the application for a state ID card.

There will be some minor fees that will need to be paid of which you will gladly pay on behalf of your homeless because you love the Lord Jesus and His compassion for the poor.

This is your ministry project for the Lord.

Take the ID application with you to your homeless meeting location and fill it out for the homeless person.

Many of homeless if not all suffer from some type of mental capacity issues. So you will need some patients in working with them.

The homeless just cannot cope for whatever the reasons are and have ended up on the streets as a homeless person. Most have diminished mental capacity. Hard to solve the problems of their situation and just cope the best they can.

After they have ID cards with both with state ID and Social Security ID you then can seek other things that can be done to help your homeless person.

There are possible social service benefits available out there to help the disadvantage, the homeless veteran.

Some churches publish or have directories of many of the public assistance services in their areas. Hospitals also do the same and often have Social Service Dept.

Call around your area to build your own resource lists for shelters, food banks, feed the homeless outreaches etc. Equip yourself and be an advocate for the poor.

The Story of Sandy Hertzberg. A homeless woman the streets for nearly 20 years

At one time I had worked with a homeless gal who was legally blind. Her name was Sandy.

Sandy was entitled to have Social Security blind disability benefits. Except she did not know how to obtain them.

So after the ID process was completed we went to apply for blindness disability benefits at the Social Security office together.

FYI: It is important to know that you may have to do a lot of hand holding of your homeless person in this process of seeking public assistance..

With my homeless gal Sandy there were a lot of hurdles to deal with Social Security and other bureaucracies.

We had to visit with their contracted doctors to find out if Sandy was blind indeed.

Sandy was legally blind from cataract disease.

So I was her advocate for this whole process. I filled out the forms for her. I drove her to her doctorís appointments.

After a year and half later of working with Sandy for obtaining Social Security blind disability benefits. Her funding did come through with all the back pay from the start date that we applied for her blind benefits.

The benefits afforded Sandy to get off the street and into convalescent care facility

She did not have enough mental capacity to manage her own affairs so I sought out the

Public Guardian Program with the county court system that then over saw that her housing bills and medical attention needs were taken care of.

Not all areas have a public Guardian program. It may be called by some other name or operated by different department of your state.

Where I live it is called the Public Guardian  as part of the county services.

Sandy had lived on the streets for nearly 20 years.

So Sandy is now living in a nursing care facility. The county public guardian program manages her bills and health care.

I have story of Sandy pixs on another page if you want to review it.

I mostly want to encourage what to do next after you get them an ID.

Remember you always have to be their unbiased best friend. Try not to judge them at all. You are serving for the Lord, Adonai Yeshua.

Just be the best of friend that you can be to them for the Lord Jesus.

From  Matthew 25:40 And the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it  unto me.

Your homeless person may be a colorful and loud mouth at times. They maybe shy!

They might suffer from hygiene issues because they cannot shower every day like you and I do.

So part of your ministry will be to help them with obtain clean clothes at times and shower once in a while as needed.

In working with the homeless we often take a lot of blessings that we have for granted.

So in helping a homeless person helps us to be humble and appreciate all the wonderful blessings that God has provided for us.

Several of the homeless that I have worked with were military veterans.

All were very nice, humble and very appreciative.

They also may be entitled to some type VA benefits, health care and their related service orgs that also can provide assistance as well.

So do your homework, get online, call around and be the advocate for your homeless person.

Find out what is available out there! Be their champion!

Because the homeless suffer from mental capacity issues, the bureaucracy of the various social services just wipes them out.

The homeless don't have the patients or resources that you and I do and need a advocate like ourselves to be a champion for them.

Your homeless ministry person may not be entitled to any public assistance!

Don't worry about it! Just continue ministering to them as you can.

Meet with them often; help out as you can, bring them some cash to help them get by for a day or a week.

I have this fine tuned now from years of doing this and I usually just meet with my homeless candidate about once a week.

We meet, we chat for a while, I seek their concerns and then give them some cash to help them purchase at least one meal a day.

The homeless veteran that I minister to will need a new sleeping bag every 2 to 3 months.

Sleeping bags can wear out quick with daily use.

So I learn that if you spray the zipper with some WD40 I can extend the zipper life of the sleeping bag.

So I give my homeless disabled Vietnam veteran who obtained purple heart a small can of WD40.

These are little tricks you will discover in your ongoing efforts of ministering to the homeless.

After working with your homeless person for a while you will start to see a change in them and their attitude!

It is amazing to see what love can do for person who is very broken and tired of living on the streets.

They start to smile again, their attitude is much softer. They are not as edgy! They start to feel like a human again.

Now you may possible be a very busy person. You might consider working with one buddy in this out reach.

The two of you can work together and divvy of the ministry needs concerns and meeting times with of your homeless person.

In-between meeting with your homeless person the two of you can also strategize and pray on what needs to be accomplished.

Team work with lots of prayer through our Lord Yeshua.

My basic ministry check list for working with the homeless.

1. Develop a fast friendship with your homeless person.

2. Bring some cash for them to buy food. And don't worry what so ever at all what they might spend it on.

Let God do all worrying about that! Just minister to them.

3. If they need IDís! Get your homeless person both a state ID and Social Security card ASAP.

4. If they need a sleeping bag, get them one. I usually shop for sale items with concerns for the temperatures outside. I normally get the extra large bag for max cold temps.

I use the attitude of "what kind of bag that would I like to use" if I had to sleep outside day to day for the temps and weather conditions currently going on.

Most of the sleeping bags I obtain usually hold up well. What the issue is that the zippers don't hold up after extended use!

The only solution is to replace the bag. I do wash and clean up the used bag and see if I can bring the zipper back to life.

5. Clothes and hygiene. You can obtain clothing at thrift stores and at some public service out reaches or churches.

Sometimes there is public assistance showering service outreach ministries. You will have to research that for your area.

Sometimes there is no public shower services available. So I would then offer the shower at my own home from time to time.

Depending on my homeless person, after I had qualified them by asking them what their background is. I might let them sleep in my garage which I have fixed up to be more like a studio apartment. This would get them out of the cold and wet weather and was more convenient for ministering to those who were good candidate for possible obtaining State, Federal or veteran public assistance relief like food stamps or waiting for Social Security funding to come through. This is what I did for Sandy. I had converted my garage into a studio apartment for her while I tending to the bureaucracy battles for her. This kept her close by so I did not have to go out and find her when it was time to take her to the Social Security doctorís appointment.

What if you don't have a garage or a living situation that will allow for this. Just make do with what you have. Be creative! Maybe there are homeless shelters in your area. Maybe a tent can be put up somewhere? Stuff like that. Pray about! See what kind of solutions can be sought out. Some cities have set aside specific acreage areas just for the homeless as tent dwellers.  In urban areas it is tough to put up a tent. But an old broken down van, cleaned up inside or an old trailer or RV might work to help out.  In the more rural areas this more of a possibility to use a low cost tent.

You just have to be a little creative and use some imagination to find solutions for your homeless person that youíre working with.

After you do this maybe you want to teach others how to do this type of ministry while you are actively involved with a homeless person. Maybe meet with others on a once a month basis or more often. Maybe start up an online chat group to exchange ideas and solutions for the homeless in your area. Start a blog. Share about your learning experience and  but please give all the glory and praise to our Lord Jesus Christ for your ministry to the homeless. Lord Jesus only wants the glory and you get all the rewards, blessings and atta boys from God. So I advise don't even think about taking the glory! You can feel good, feel blessed, you can be excited and but please give all the glory and praise for your successful ministry outreach only to our Lord Jesus Christ.

I find that working with the homeless that I have competed many of the items on what I call The Lord's heart for the less fortunate.

As a student and teacher of Bible prophecy. Most prophecies have both near and far applications.

Working with the homeless is very personal and this prophecy of Matthew 25:31-46 has a very a personal application being taught from it and will be applied to everyone.

Lord Jesus said what you do unto the least of the brethren you have done unto me. Good or not so good.

Lord Jesus has tremendous compassion for the poor and needy which He calls the least of these brethren.

So if you love Jesus and want to invite Jesus into your home one of the ways to do this is to minister to the poor and needy.

Also if you don't do those things that Jesus commanded us to do there consequences for that as well.

Please read Matthew 25:31-46

Matt 25:31 When the Son of man shall come in his glory, and all the holy angels with him, then shall he sit upon the throne of his glory:
Matt 25:32 And before him shall be gathered all nations: and he shall separate them one from another, as a shepherd divideth his sheep from the goats:
Matt 25:33 And he shall set the sheep on his right hand, but the goats on the left.
Matt 25:34 Then shall the King say unto them on his right hand, Come, ye blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world:
Matt 25:35 For I was an hungred, and ye gave me meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave me drink: I was a stranger, and ye took me in:
Matt 25:36 Naked, and ye clothed me: I was sick, and ye visited me: I was in prison, and ye came unto me.
Matt 25:37 Then shall the righteous answer him, saying, Lord, when saw we thee an hungred, and fed thee or thirsty, and gave thee drink?
Matt 25:38 When saw we thee a stranger, and took thee in? or naked, and clothed thee?
Matt 25:39 Or when saw we thee sick, or in prison, and came unto thee?
Matt 25:40 And the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me.
Matt 25:41 Then shall he say also unto them on the left hand, Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels:
Matt 25:42 For I was an hungry, and ye gave me no food: I was thirsty, and ye gave me no drink:
Matt 25:43 I was a stranger, and ye took me not in: naked, and ye clothed me not: sick, and in prison, and ye visited me not.
Matt 25:44 hen shall they also answer him, saying, Lord, when saw we thee an hungry, or thirsty, or a stranger, or naked, or sick, or in prison, and did not minister unto thee?
Matt 25:45 Then shall he answer them, saying, Verily I say unto you, In as much as ye did it not to one of the least of these, ye did it not to me.
Matt 25:46 And these shall go away into everlasting punishment: but the righteous into life eternal

With the Lord's generous help I was able to complete each item on this ministry to do list. It was not that tough at all and I was to complete each item mentioned here in the Matthew 25:31-46 passages. I completed all this in a very short amount of time.

From prison ministry page

I encourage everyone as part of your walk in the Lord Jesus to do some type of jail or prison ministry out reach. It is very rewarding and a great blessing to the inmate that you visit with.

I participated with prison ministry with the Match Two prison out reach at CRC prison (Hotel California) at Norco California with inmate Michael Smith. Though Michael had some issues he later was asked by Match Two leadership to be a key note speaker for their annual year end dinner held on the woman's side of the CRC prison. This because of a letter Michael Smith had wrote to the Match Two and how participating in the Match Two program and having me as a mentor had changed his life while being an inmate at CRC. Michael Smith has no family what so ever. So I was asked to accompany Michael Smith to the very privilege year end dinner held by M2.

Matthew 25:36 Naked, and ye clothed me: I was sick, and ye visited me: I was in prison, and ye came unto me.

FYI: Hotel California is the where a band member of the Eagles group did some prison time and what the song Hotel California (please see this page). Interesting enough I had met Glenn Frey of the Eagles band and also had booked the Eagles band for several weeks of closed set rehearsals while I was working at GMT Studios Culver City, CA this just before the start of their  Hell Freezes Over tour circa 1994. All this during the time frame that I was ministering to Michael Smith at CRC prison, Hotel California.

Most all of your prison systems and county jails have ministry outreaches. Your church may already be a part of a jail or prison ministry.  If not, contact your local Sheriff office and find out who is doing  ministry outreach work with them or call your state prison system and find out who has prison ministry out reaches with their facilities. Maybe you want to start a jail or prison ministry outreach for your church?  I mention this here because the homeless are everywhere and are fast and easy to work with. Working with a prison inmate or being part of a prison outreach ministry can take a little more time and is a bit more involved. Sometimes involving back ground checks and going on visits only on specific days and times. I did prison ministry work while also working with homeless Sandy and several other homeless people who were African American veterans who were shut out by "the overwhelming bureaucracy" and after a long haul of being an advocate for them, the sea of bureaucracy finally parted and things hoped for came through. All this during the same time frame. Again none of these ministry items are very taxing and as you read about them to do in Matthew 25:31-46

There are very good rewards and blessings for the obedient to the Lord's commands of to love the poor and needy and bad rewards to the disobedient , the rebellious, the selfish who rejected the Lord's commands to have love and compassion for the poor and needy and to those in prison.

Just doing all these things really helps shapes your heart into being the kind of person that our Lord Jesus Christ wants you to be. Also it helps you to appreciate the all the blessings that the Lord has blessed you with, to pause and give thanks to the Lord Jesus and not take so much that we are blessed with for granted.
